Review: La Roche Posay Effaclar Mat - Sebo-Regulating Moisturizer

Hello hello!
I thought I would do a review of the moisturiser I am currently using, I have been using this for over a month now, and I love what it has done for my skin so I thought it's only right to give it it's own review!

La Roche Posay - Effaclar Mat Sebo-Regulating Moisturizer

I'm using the Effaclar Mat moisturiser by a fantastic French skincare brand called La Roche Posay, they're products are talked about a lot on blogs and YouTube and they have a great selection. I originally delved into La Roche Posay after watching one of Lisa Eldridge's videos about French Skincare (Click here to watch, she's amazing!) where she mentioned a few of the products. I have always suffered with quite combination/oily skin, my T-zone often looked very greasy and oily by lunchtime and my make-up was always patchy and non-existent by the end of a long day. I was looking for something (desperately!) that would not just help me to stay matte for longer during the day, but something that would actually change my skin long-term. That is what this moisturiser has done for me!

40ml of product

Previously called 'Effaclar M', I bought this just after it changed name to 'Effaclar Mat' with different packaging, this moisturiser claims to be 'Sebo-Regulating', meaning that it actually regulates the amount of sebum (oils) that your skin produces. Amazing, huh?

What La Roche Posay say:

"Indications

Oily skin. Suitable for sensitive skin. Oil-free blotting effect texture: Proven long lasting mattifying effect. Non-comedogenic. Tested under dermatological control.

Properties

Day after day, acts at the source for a two fold performace anti-shine + anti-enlarged pores. With the exclusive association of :
- Sebulyse , a new sebo-regulating active ingredient more powerful than Zinc, selected for its ability to inhibit sebum production at its source.
- Oil-free texture enriched with absorbent micro-spheres and perlite for matt skin on application.

Results

Moisturizes and mattifies the skin immediately. Day after day skin texture is refined, pores are tightened and sebum production slows down."

As far as these claims go, I would say that this product has:

  • Reduced the size of my pores with continued use (my pores used to be very wide and often more noticable when wearing make-up)
  • Reduced the amount of sebum I produce day in, day out - I rarely have to touch up for shine, my skin is usually glowing and non-oily all day
  • It moisturises and mattifies - my face does not need re-moisturising or feel dry when using this, it feels like a primer when you put it on - matte and silky

I have emboldened 'Salicylic acid' in the ingredients list, because if you have read my review on one of my favourite cleansers, (Click here to read the post - I explain what Salicylic acid does) you will know how much I love this ingredient!

Yes, it contains silicone, but this has not irritated my skin or broken me out in any way, so I'm okay with that. This product has CHANGED my skin undoubtedly - I no longer have large pores, copious amounts of oil or sliding make-up. This helps my make-up to stay on and leaves me with a smooth, glowing and non oily complexion at the end of the day. This may not work on all skins, but for me, I could not thank this product enough! Oily skin and flashback in photos is something I was always conscious of, but not now.

I think this is a brilliant product, if you have oily/combination skin that really needs some help with oil production then you may find this is your perfect moisturiser! Remember, salicylic acid does wonders for blackheads! I have a few other products from La Roche Posay - those of which I am loving also so I may do reviews on them soon!

You can buy the Effaclar Mat at selected Boots stores, online at Boots.com, Escentual.com (at a discounted price, where I buy my Posay products) and many other websites. It's RRP is between £13.50 and £15.00 (Currently £12.75 on Escentual!)

Hope you liked the review! :-)

    1. Hi! No I don't use the ones that go with this, I mainly use Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm and Superfacialist by Una Brennan Rose Hydrate Creamy Cleanser. As for toner I use P50 by Biologique Recherche and Lancome's Tonique Doucer - all amazing products! Thanks for your comment :-) xx

  5. I've been using this for a month and I do like it! However sometimes after I apply it tingles on my skin, which is making me nervous. I guess it's the alcohol. I'm so sad because I think I might not repurchase because of the tingling! My skin is sensitive (AND oily, lol) so I don't wanna risk it!

  6. I have been using this moisturizer for months and I can't say that it's done for my skin what it has for yours... but I keep using it because I love the Effaclar line! The acne gel is the only non-BP/SA facial wash that works for my skin.
